"Sāṅkhya does not ask you to believe in anything. It asks you to look — clearly, carefully, and without flinching."

About This Course

A philosophy — not a belief system

Sāṅkhya is one of the six orthodox darśanas of classical India and is widely regarded as the oldest systematic philosophical tradition in the world. The very word sāṅkhya means “enumeration” or “clear reckoning” — and true to its name, it offers a precise, step-by-step account of how the universe arises, how the human mind works, and why suffering occurs.

What makes Sāṅkhya remarkable is that it begins not with God or scripture but with a simple, unflinching question: why do we suffer, and is freedom possible? From this question, it builds one of humanity’s most elegant frameworks — tracing existence from the subtlest cosmic principles down to the grossest elements of the physical world. This course explores that entire journey — patiently, clearly, and in direct relationship to lived experience.

Core Teachings

What we explore together

Six foundational themes of Sāṅkhya philosophy — from the origin of the cosmos to the nature of freedom — explored as living insights.

Purusha & Prakriti

The Two Fundamental Realities

Sāṅkhya rests on a single foundational insight — that reality consists of two irreducible principles: Purusha, pure consciousness, and Prakriti, the dynamic field of matter. Understanding their distinction is the heart of the entire philosophy.

The Three Guṇas

Devotion as Inner Alignment

Prakriti is not static it is perpetually in motion, woven from three qualities: clarity (sattva), activity (rajas), and inertia (tamas). This course explores how the guṇas govern the entire spectrum of experience, from perception and emotion to the rise and fall of mental states.

The 25 Tattvas

The Unfolding of Creation

From the interaction of Purusha and Prakriti unfolds a precise sequence of 25 tattvas — principles of existence ranging from cosmic intelligence and ego down through the senses, subtle elements, and the five gross elements of the physical world.

Mind, Ego & Intellect

The Inner Working System for Self Growth

Sāṅkhya maps the inner world with extraordinary precision —
showing how the antaḥkaraṇa (inner instrument of mind, ego, and intellect) shapes perception, creates identity, and gives rise to the sense of a separate self that is the root of all suffering.

Bandha & Kaivalya

Bondage and Absolute Freedom

Why does the free and eternal Purusha appear bound? Sāṅkhya answers this with clarity through the mechanism of misidentification (avidyā). And it shows that freedom is not attained but revealed through viveka, the steady discrimination of consciousness from matter.

Sāṅkhya & Yoga

The Philosophical Foundation of Yoga

Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras, Āyurvedic medicine, and the Bhagavad Gītā all draw deeply from Sāṅkhya. This course illuminates those connections — showing Sāṅkhya not as an isolated philosophy but as a living root from which India’s greatest knowledge traditions grew.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions & Answers

Sāṅkhya is one of India’s six classical philosophical systems and is widely considered the oldest systematic philosophy in the world. It offers a precise, non-theological account of why suffering arises and how freedom is possible — making it as relevant today as when it was first articulated. It is also the philosophical foundation of Yoga, Āyurveda, and large portions of the Bhagavad Gītā.
No prior knowledge of any kind is required. The course is designed to introduce Sāṅkhya Philosophy step by step, from its most fundamental concepts outward. Sanskrit terms are introduced carefully and always explained. Anyone with a genuine interest in understanding the nature of mind, existence, and freedom is welcome.
No. Sāṅkhya Philosophy is non-theistic — it does not posit God as part of its framework. It is a purely philosophical and analytical system focused on understanding the structure of reality and experience. This course involves no ritual, devotional practice, or requirement to adopt any belief. It is inquiry, not instruction in faith.
While Sāṅkhya is a philosophical system, its insights are consistently grounded in direct, observable experience. Students come to recognise how the guṇas shape their moods, how the ego creates identity and conflict, how misidentification with thought and sensation produces suffering — and how this clarity begins to dissolve it. Philosophy becomes a lived reality, not an academic exercise.
